The institution of subsidiary protection is a creation of international law and European Union law. It is granted to persons who are at risk of suffering serious harm in their country of origin. Serious harm consists of the following: capital punishment or execution, torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, serious personal threat to the life or physical integrity of a civilian due to violence exercised indiscriminately in situations of international or internal armed conflict.
